What is the cost of the program?

Current graduate tuition is single low rate of $450 per credit hour beginning the 2024-25 academic year. This competitive tuition rate supersedes any other previously advertised partner school discounts.

The program is 30 credits, making the total tuition for the entire program a very competitive $13,500. More details about tuition and fees at Eastern University.

Financial aid is available, and more information can be found on Eastern’s website.

To find out more about these opportunities, please contact Dr. Ravi Jain.

What scholarship opportunities are available for the program?

All students are able to apply for financial aid through the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

There may also be a few spaces in the MAT cohort for Eastern University employees and family members receiving tuition remission.

What certifications are available?

The MAT does not currently offer PA teaching certification. State certification is not a requirement for teaching in private or charter classical schools.

What is the structure of the program?

In-person Education

The MAT follows a cohort-model consisting of two, five-week residential summer terms in which students enroll in up to four classes during the summer. Due to the compact structure of the program, these summer residencies are quite intensive, with classes meeting almost every day of the week. A typical summer schedule includes classes from 9-12 AM and 1-4 PM Monday through Friday.

Online and other Options

Flexible options for completing the MAT program include:

  • Asynchronous online courses offered during the Fall and Spring terms
  • Self-paced online courses offered through ClassicalU
  • Individualized directed studies completed under the guidance of an MAT Fellow
  • Thesis projects (up to 6 credit hours)

I teach elementary school, am I eligible for the MAT?

Yes. Teachers of all grade levels are welcome to apply, as are those who are not currently teaching.

Do I need to teach at a classical school in order to enroll in the MAT? What if I’m not teaching at all but am interested in doing it one day?

No, you do not need to teach at a classical school to participate, nor do you need to be a teacher. The program is open to both teachers at private and public schools, as well as to non-teachers.

If necessary, could I take a semester off?

If you need to take a semester off, it is possible to pick up again and take a class with a different cohort. Students can adjust the pace and sequence of the program as needed.

Is there a residency requirement for the MAT?

The heart of the MAT are the courses that take place during a rich and wonderful four-week summer residency in St. Davids, PA, just outside Philadelphia. These courses are not offered online, and so must be taken on campus. In that sense the residency is required, but it is not required that students stay on campus.

Do I need a bachelor’s degree in a specific field or subject to qualify as a candidate for MAT?

No, you do not need to have specific undergraduate degree. We will accept students with a variety of bachelor’s degrees.

Is there advanced standing for Templeton alumni?

Templeton students with a 3.5 GPA and Templeton alumni are automatically admitted to the MAT program.

Can I begin the MAT before I have graduated with my Bachelor’s Degree?

Yes, rising seniors in undergrad can begin the summer before their senior year.

Can graduate students at other institutions transfer credit to apply toward the MAT?

Yes, students may receive up to 12 transfer credits from another accredited Master's program. Eligible transfer credits will be determined after a review of the applicants official transcript of graduate courses. Students must confirm that they have officially withdrawn from the prior program before credits will be applied toward their MAT degree.

Is the program only for recent college graduates?

The MAT is not specifically for recent college graduates. Much of the program structure is designed for current teachers, as most of the coursework falls in the summer. The MAT is for aspiring teachers, new teachers, and teachers with years under their belt, who all share a desire to become betters teachers in the classroom and leaders in their schools.
