Welcoming Dr. Kathryn Smith

We are excited to welcome Dr. Kathryn Smith as the first Director of the Masters of Arts in Teaching! Dr. Smith will be directing the Masters of Arts in Teaching beginning this year, as well as teaching the second course of the Honors Western Civilization sequence for Templeton first-years and Medieval and Renaissance Europe for general Eastern undergraduate students.

Dr. Kathryn Smith was born in El Paso, Texas but grew up in New Mexico where she earned her B.A. at the University of New Mexico. She continued with her education at the University of Dallas where she completed her M.A. in English and her Ph.D. in literature at the Braniff Graduate School, Institute of Philosophic Studies at the University of Dallas. Her dissertation was titled “Jorie Graham in Limbo: Desire and Metaphysics in Her Poetry.”

While working on her Ph.D, Dr. Kathryn Smith had the opportunity to study under the late Louise Cowan, a nationally recognized leader in humanities education and co-founder of the Braniff Graduate School of Liberal Arts. Dr. Smith is currently engaged in a project to collect and archive Louise Cowan’s papers.

Dr. Smith has been teaching literature for a number of years, both at the University of Dallas as well as at the Cambridge School of Dallas and at Anthem Preparatory School, part of the Great Hearts Academy network. Her areas of expertise include Modernist and Contemporary American Poetry, Classical and Modern Rhetoric, American Literature in both the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and the Baroque period. Dr. Smith is also competent in Spanish and can read French and Greek.  Outside of the classroom, she enjoys mountain biking, skiing, hiking, tennis, and swimming, and she is currently moving in to the Greater Philadelphia area with her loving husband, Bryan, and her beautiful three-year-old daughter Elizabeth.
