The Historic Debut of Eastern University's Goebel Collection

On Valentine’s Day, the doors of the Richardson T. Merriman Family Art Gallery were opened to guests eager to finally see Eastern University's Goebel Collection displayed.

This collection of over 1,000 etchings from renowned artists (Rembrandt, Picasso, and Goya, just to name a few), has lived at Eastern University for decades. While the pieces were safely preserved by diligent librarians, the Goebel Collection never had a proper place to flourish and stand before the public.

This second ever show at the Merriman Gallery displayed 36 pieces, only scratching the surface of this vast collection. It was a delight to see guests take time with each piece, carefully consulting the catalog of artwork created by Templeton Gallery Assistant, Max Kane. It was an additional delight to give guests complimentary copies of Alfonz Lengyel’s book, Select Prints from the Goebel Collection at Eastern College, and to hear Dean Brian Williams recount the story of how this art was brought to Eastern University.

Thank you to all who attended the opening reception! This exhibit will hang through May 15, 2026, so plan to stop by between now and then.  Be sure to follow the Merriman Art Gallery and the Templeton Honors College Instagram accounts to stay up to date on gallery shows and other Templeton events.
