On Creativity

The resolutions of the Templeton Honors College each new year remain the same: to shape its students into good humans. The college approaches this spiritual formation through its reading, writing, and discussion-heavy class style. But students also learn about how to be human when they perform in Eastern’s musicals and plays, choreograph for the dance showcases, walk through the Merriman Art Gallery, and much more. Templeton scholars are encouraged to pursue the Good Life, which has everything to do with creativity.

In a culture that moves fast and prioritizes efficiency, it is hard to remember that to be human is to be creative. Poet Christine Perrin creates with words. Artists Bruce Herman and Ed Knippers create with canvas and paint. But even those of us who are not artists professionally can pursue the Creative Life. It just might look more like paying attention while chopping vegetables for weeknight meals, or walking slowly through the neighborhood.

As we move through this new year, may we all remember that we are made in the image of the true Creator, and take it upon ourselves to explore what that looks like for us in our ordinary lives.
