Dr. Kathryn Smith, Co-Director of the MAT in Classical Education and Assistant Professor of Classical Education, teaches a course this Spring on Dostoevsky's masterpiece, The Brothers Karamazov.
The course will engage in a close study of the work to appreciate more fully its many facets, mostly focusing on the way in which the novel reflects a deep understanding of Eastern Orthodox Christianity. The class will be a seminar in which students will be responsible for engaging in discussion based on their reading of the novel.
Few authors in history have done so much to balance a desire for holy devotion to God in the face of abysmal evil. The Brothers Karamazov is Dostoevsky's genius essay toward that balance.
